There were many ways my teacher used activities that were engaging for students.

  1. The first example of an engaging activity my cooperating teacher did was coloring and cutting. She had the students choose a crown with one of the word that they were learning. Once the students chose their word they took it back to their desk and drew on it and colored it however they wanted. Once it was all colored they cut out the crown shape and the teacher stapled it to a band to make crowns for the students.

This was very engaging for the students because they got to physically draw on something as well as cut it out. They were also seeing the word the whole time they were coloring and cutting. Making something that the students can wear and keep is engaging because it is something that is cool to them that they want to do. Every student loves taking things home with them.

  1. The second example I saw was that she had the students read to each other. She had them choose out a book the week before and had them take it home with them. They would read it at home and practice before they had to read it to the class. Then the next week at school all the students would sit on the carpet while the one student read a book to the class.

This is engaging because when a student has to prepare for something they are going to have to do in front of other people, they really focus on it. Letting the student choose the book engages them because it is something they want to do. The teacher also had all of the students summarize the story at the end to make sure they would listen, especially to details, in the story.

  1. The last example of an engaging activity the teacher did was she had the children sing songs together. She would have them sing the song “happy” and clap their hands. They would all sing together and laugh and smile and get very excited about the singing.

This was engaging to the students because they were focusing on singing the song. Singing all together was really fun for all of the students and they loved clapping along to the singing. Almost anything you do that gets the students super happy and excited will be engaging for them.
